Stephan Sinding, Berlin (1911), text p. 43-5, ill. p. 39 and 40. The Norvegian sculptor Stephan Abel Sinding studied law at Kristiania University, Oslo, from 1865, in 1870 after having finished his studies, he turned to sculpture. Between 1871 and 1873 he studied with Albert Wolff, disciple of Christian D. Rauch, in Berlin. In 1874 he had his own studio in Paris and returned to Kristiania in 1875. Between 1880 and 1883 he was in Rome, then in Copenhagen and from 1911 onwards in Paris. Sinding's accomplished art, connecting clear form with deep sentiment, acquired European prestige. Among his major works are 'The Slave', 1875, 'Barbarian Mother', 1883, 'L'Offrande', 1919 (monument for the French students killed during World War I), as well as the colossal monument 'Mother Earth', 1900.
